European Commission to approve Apple's opening up of iPhone tap-to-pay to third parties in May

iOS 17.4 came out last month with monumental changes for iPhone owners in the EU, including the ability to use third party app stores, and pay for apps and services outside of Apple's App Store.

This was made possible by force - namely, the European Digital Markets Act made Apple allow these things, otherwise they never would have happened. A similar case of a 'walled garden' impenetrable to third parties has so far been the ability to pay for stuff using the iPhone's NFC functionality, which the company restricts to only its own service, Apple Pay. That, however, will change in the EU,...

$99.99 Umidigi G9 5G has a 50 MP main camera, 5,000 mAh battery, and 128GB of storage

There are good smartphones for the price, there are great smartphones for the price, and then there's the newly unveiled Umidigi G9 5G. This was just presented in Hong Kong at the 2024 Global Sources Mobile Electronics show, and it has an insane price: just $99.99.

That's incredibly cheap, but the specs are actually pretty good. So let's go through them. Unsurprisingly to hit that price point, the G9 5G uses a Unisoc chipset, specifically the T765. This comes with an octa-core CPU with two Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.3 GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2.1 GHz.

12.9-inch iPad Air to have Mini LED display

The next generation iPad Air has long been rumored to come in two sizes, emulating the iPad Pro line for the first time. And while the next iPad Pro will switch to OLED for its screen technology, it looks like the upcoming larger iPad Air will use the Mini LED tech that is in the current iPad Pro generation.

This information comes from Display Supply Chain Consultants' Ross Young, generally a reliable source for this kind of stuff. The move to Mini LED for the 12.9" iPad Air would give it lower power consumption, better brightness for HDR content and deeper blacks compared to the IPS LCD...

Nothing Ear and Ear (a) in for review

No one does earbuds launch quite like Nothing, not even Apple. Nothing has been issuing teasers with beetles and frogs for the last few weeks, leading up to the announcement of the Nothing Ear and the Nothing Ear (a) earlier today.

It's a significant release for a couple of reasons - first, the nomenclature has changed - gone is the Ear (1), (2), instead of a (3) model we just get Ear. And, second, this is the first time Nothing has released a more affordable model in the (a). But while the Ear is €149/$149/£129 and the Ear (a) is €99/$99/£99, don't think you're getting an inferior product...

Huawei's new Kirin 9010 brings minor CPU improvements

Huawei announced the Pura 70 series today, and once again offered no details regarding the chipsets. However, early benchrmarks confirmed they feature a new platform called Kirin 9010, which has an 8-core CPU, identified by apps as 12-core unit due to hyperthreading.

Hyperthreading is nothing new in the chipset industry, as the Taishan cores have been supporting the technology for some time; it has been part of the Kirin 9000s and now is a part of the 9010 as well.

First Geekbench results revealed a minor improvement in raw performance, coming from slightly faster core speeds. The...

Sony Xperia 1 VI launch event rumored to take place on May 17

Sony announced the Xperia 1 V on May 11 last year, and it seems like the Japanese company is planning to stick to almost exactly the same timeline in 2024. According to a leaked poster from Weibo, Sony will be holding an Xperia launch event on May 17.

The poster itself doesn't say which phone(s) will become official on that date, but it's pretty easy to assume that one (or the only one) will be the Xperia 1 VI, which has been leaking quite a bit lately.

iOS 17.5 lets people in the EU download apps from websites

Today Apple has released iOS 17.5 beta 2 to developers, and we don't normally report on such releases, but this one's important, as it marks the debut of yet another feature Apple was forced to add thanks to the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Starting in iOS 17.5, EU iPhone owners will be able to download apps from websites - aka sideloading. No need to go through Apple's App Store, or any other app store for that matter - Apple also started supporting alternative app stores thanks to the DMA in iOS 17.4.

Now this takes the flexibility of finding apps one step further. However,...

Oppo A60 surfaces in the Google Play Console, has its specs revealed

Oppo's long-running A series of mid-range smartphones is soon due to receive a new member - the Oppo A60. The naming implies it will be the successor to the A59, launched back in December of last year. However, there's a twist - the A59 has 5G support, while the A60 doesn't, which means it will more likely act as the successor to the A58 4G from July 2023.

The A60 has been spotted in the Google Play Console, and as usual that listing reveals some if its specs, including the most important one - it will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 680 SoC, which is not 5G capable. The A58 4G went...

Samsung Galaxy A55 vs. Galaxy S23 FE (Exynos)

The Samsung Galaxy A55 vs. Galaxy S23 FE is quite an unlikely duo for one of our dedicated versus articles, but Samsung's pricing strategy led us here. After launching this year's popular Galaxy A55 at around €450 (now just a little over €400), the company has positioned it too close to its budget flagship, the Galaxy S23 FE.

But those devices are not created equal by any means. The Galaxy S23 FE is still the more expensive of the two (now selling for around €500), but it also delivers a flagship-like experience, while the A55 tries to strike a good balance between hardware and cost. They...
