The upcoming iOS 17 might take a big step towards sideloading

Apple has opposed sideloading apps on its devices ever since the inception of the iPhone, but that may be changing soon. In fact, according to Mark Gurman, a renowned Apple analyst, the next iOS 17 will enable just that. But don't hold your breath, as this isn't confirmed just yet. The upcoming iOS 17 might just lay the grounds for sideloading in the future. Then again, the EU's new Digital Market Act is coming into effect in 2024 and requires companies to allow users to install apps from alternative sources, so there's a good chance the change is coming with iOS 17. And if Apple...

Huawei Watch Ultimate review

Introduction The Watch Ultimate arrived, claiming to be the best Huawei wearable yet. It comes with a 100-meter water rating, Exploration Mode for the outdoorsy types and an incredibly durable build. We spent nearly a month with a unit to test all its features, and here are our findings. The Watch Ultimate arrives in only one size - 1.5" or 48.5 mm in diagonal. It is priced close to the Apple Watch Ultra and the Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro, but its user experience is unlike those two, so it will cater to a different audience. Weekly poll: can the Asus ROG Phone 7 and 7 Ultimate win the battle for your heart?

As of a couple of years ago mobile games bring in more revenue than the PC and console markets combined. The scene has grown and evolved and there are proper AAA games on mobile, plus tournaments and Twitch streams featuring said games. Gaming phones evolved alongside those games too – phones like the Asus ROG Phone 7 and the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate. In fact, Asus ROG was the official sponsor of the CoD: Mobile World Championship 2022, which promoted the ROG Phone 6 and 6 Pro. All this build-up is to answer the question “Can’t I just play games on my flagship phone?” “Yes, you can” is...

Weekly poll results: the Motorola Edge 40 Pro is off to a strong start

Nearly half of the voters in last week’s poll are interested in the Motorola Edge 40 Pro, though a lot of them were holding off on making a final decision until the reviews came out. If you’re one of them, check out our review (including on video). Spoiler alert: it’s a great high-end phone, though the camera isn’t up to the standard of some of the more camera-oriented flagships out there. And while the Moto is cheaper than those, it’s not exactly cheap at €900/£800. Around 17% of voters felt that the price could stand to be a bit lower and the cost of Edge models does fall over time...

Flashback: Android makers tried to emulate the iPod touch, failed

Apple introduced the original iPhone in January 2007 and a few months later it leveraged the new all-touch interface to add a new branch to the iPod family tree. While the iPod touch was outsold by the iPhone, it was still highly successful – Apple celebrated 100 million units sold in mind 2013. Naturally, Android makers wanted to have their own iPod touch. In 2009 the Archos 5 Internet Tablet hit the scene. It was billed as a “PMP”, Portable Media Player, and it may have been the first of its kind to run Android (v1.6 Donut). Flashback: the LG BL40 New Chocolate put a cinema in your pocket with its 4" 21:9 display

How wide is too wide? That’s a silly question, LG thought in 2009 when it released the LG BL40 New Chocolate. With a 4” display of cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio, this phone was unique for its time – at that point a typical phone had a 4:3 or 3:2 display, while media-focused devices went 16:9 to match the emerging HDTV standards. But 21:9 was unheard of. To some extent aspect ratio dictates what kind of content is viewed. The earliest TVs had squarish ratios because they mostly showed newscasters – portrait images, basically.
