Kyocera stops making phones for consumers

Today Kyocera has announced that it's officially leaving the consumer mobile phone business, after a struggling period in which the company amassed a JPY 2.27 billion ($16.6 million) loss this February. In other news, it looks like Kyocera was still making phones - even though you, like us, may not have heard of any in the past few months (or years). The company is only quitting the consumer space, by the way. It will continue to serve corporate customers. With deteriorating profitability, something had to be done and apparently axing the consumer products was it. "We can no longer find...

Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate goes through torture test, lives to tell the story

We reviewed the Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate not too long ago and crowned as arguably the best gaming phone at the moment. One of the main differentiating factors between the standard ROG Phone 7 and the Ultimate edition is the latter’s AeroActive Portal – a motorized air-intake system that works in tandem with the AeroActive Cooler accessory and JerryRigEverything has his latest torture test to show us how it works and how the phone fares in his usual set of durability tests. After the host breaks up the plastic window of the AeroAcrive Cooler and props the AeroActive Portal’s flap open...

Kuo:Apple's AR/MR headset to boost entire VR industry

Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is confident that Apple's highly-anticipated AR/VR headset will be unveiled at June's WWDC. He notes that Apple is 'well prepared to release' the new device. He also notes that the headset's release will greatly benefit Apple's supply chain partners, boosting the entire VR industry. The more expensive bits of an AR/VR headset are the assembly (a Luxshare exclusive), the micro OLED display (exclusive to Sony), the dual processor (exclusive to TSMC), the chassis (mostly supplied by Everwin Precision), the 12 camera modules (exclusive to Cowell Electronics), and...

EU moves to ban misleading battery life ads, mandate third party repairs

The European Parliament drafted new legislation with the goal of offering better product labeling in the EU and limiting misleading product characteristics, environmental claims and repairability restrictions. The directive will target the use of unsubstantiated environmental claims on packing and ads such as “climate neutral” and “environmentally friendly” by manufacturers if these are not backed by detailed evidence. The legislation draft also foresees clear labeling for the cost of product repairs and any potential repair restrictions by manufacturers. The industry will no...

Top 10 trending phones of week 19

Week 18 saw the official debut of a number of exciting phones and it's no wonder our trending chart looks very different from last week. The Samsung Galaxy A54 was knocked off the lead for only the second time since it went official in mid-March. In fact it was overtaken by no fewer than four of the new phones and is now sitting in fifth position. It was the Poco F5 that ended up on top this week, narrowly edging the Sony Xperia 1 V. The Sony flagship put up a great fight, but the fact that the Xiaomi phone had a two-day advantage proved decisive. Poco F5 Pro got the bronze medal,...

Huawei FreeBuds 5 review

Introduction The FreeBuds range from Huawei has offered some great wireless earbuds over the years and the new FreeBuds 5 are the latest entry. They arrive with a bold new design, flagship-level features and a combined 30-hour battery life. FreeBuds 5 come as a successor to 2021’s FreeBuds 4, which were a solid pair of open-ear buds. The specs department looks quite impressive with 11mm drivers, an active noise cancelation system with three microphones on each bud, multi-point pairing, LDAC support and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity. Can these oddly shaped buds compete with the premium...

Weekly poll results: the Motorola Edge+ (2023) is off to a great start, the Edge 40 pricing is off

The new Motorola Edge+ (2023) for the US market is showing a lot of promise – last week’s poll shows that 45% of voters are interested in the Moto flagship. Mostly the same hardware is available as the Edge 40 Pro elsewhere, but the thing about the US market is that there are very few competing brands, especially in the flagship segment. This means that the Edge+ is mostly going up against Galaxy S, Pixel and iPhone models, though there is the OnePlus too. While Samsung and Apple can rely on their brand names to support the higher price tags, Motorola’s popularity is past its prime. The...

The Redmagic 4K Gaming Monitor 27" is the company's first monitor and it's a beast. It impresses with a cutting-edge miniLED panel that boasts high maximum brightness, nice contrast and 1,152 dimming zones for proper HDR experience.
