Deals: Google Pixel 9 and Samsung Galaxy S24 offers

Pre-orders for the new iPhone 16 series started Friday last week and this Friday the new Apple phones went on sale. The big question now is should you buy one? And if not, what then? Last week we focused on refurbished iPhones as an alternative. This week we will focus on what the Android world has to offer.

We start with Google. The Pixel 9 has a 6.3” OLED display, not an LTPO, but it does run at 120Hz (making the iPhone 16’s 60Hz display look ancient). The Tensor G4 is no match for the Apple A18 in general performance, but it handles Google’s AI features just fine – and those AI features...

Deals: iPhone 16 series goes on sale, prices of Android phones drop

The iPhone 16 series went on sale this Friday with brand new Camera Control and Action Button, plus new ultra wide cameras – quadruple the resolution (48MP) for the Pros and autofocus for the vanilla models. And, of course, Apple Intelligence AI for all four, but that one isn’t ready yet – that will reach India next year(at least the version in English).

Here are the four new iPhone models. The vanilla duo still uses the 6.1” and 6.7” 60Hz displays like the 2023 models. The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max got larger and their displays now measure 6.3” and 6.9”, respectively. The two...

iPhone 17 family to have big display upgrades

The iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Slim (which will replace the Plus model since it's not selling well at all), iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max will all come with significant display upgrades next year, according to Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants.

Young says the iPhone 17 will finally get 120 Hz refresh rate and an LTPO OLED panel, meaning it will be able to vary the refresh rate down to very low rates, possibly even 1 Hz. This has been a very long time coming, since Apple still, even with the iPhone 16 family, gatekeeps high refresh rate for the Pro models.

Alongside the...

Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max in for review

Every year, we hear some form of "the biggest update to the iPhone ever" and while it's accuracy varies standing across from you today is truly the biggest iPhone ever - the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Let's get the unboxing out of the way before we go on. You get a nice, braided USB-C cable and a SIM tool - enjoy them while you can, we have a feeling they might also be on their way out.

Apple put a truly massive 6.9-inch screen in this year's Pro Max but this doesn't feel like a massive iPhone. That's because Apple also thinned the bezels and the upsizing doesn't feel as drastic. Still,...

The Xiaomi 15 is expected to launch in October as the first device powered by the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC. As we get closer to its unveiling, it's getting certified more and more, left and right. Today it's been spotted in the 3C database.

This certification has confirmed the fact that the phone has 90W wired charging support. That is exactly the same as its predecessor, so there will be no upgrade to speak of in this regard.

Unfortunately, this listing doesn't go into any detail about the wireless charging support. That may very well stay identical to the Xiaomi...

Google has already sent the Android 15 code to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), but it hasn't released an update for its supported Pixels yet. That has been rumored to arrive next month, and today we finally have a purported release date.

According to a new report, Google will start the over-the-air rollout of the Android 15 update for Pixels on October 15. This report also comes with the caveat that things could still change from now until then, especially if some show-stopping bugs are found in the meantime.

Android 15 will be available for the Pixel 6 and newer devices....

Google wins apppeal against EU's €1.5B fine from 2019

Google oveturned a €1.5 billion (about $1.7 billion at today's rate) penalty by the European Union, issued back in March 2019. The fine was originally handed down after the search engine was found brokering deals that violated competition rules between 2006 and 2016.

Sources said the EU can appeal the General Court's decision to the bloc's highest court, the Court of Justice (CJEU), but it has yet to confirm whether it will do so.

The original case against Google was the US company set too restrictive clauses for AdSense partners, “cementing its dominant position”. AdSense for...

Patent reveals possible tri-fold phone from Xiaomi

Way back in 2019, Xiaomi patented a tri-fold design, but knowing what we know now, that kind of funky design will never work in the real world. There was another patent that showed a more sensible design, but it needed segments to bend both ways, which may be tricky. A month ago, we heard rumors that Xiaomi will show off a tri-folding phone (or at least a prototype of one) at MWC in February 2025. And now a patent published by the China National Intellectual Property Administration has been revealed that shows what this device might look like.

The patent was issued back in December of 2022...

iPadOS 18 rollout reportedly halted for M4 iPad Pro after reports of bricking

Apple doesn't often have problems with its software update rollouts, even though it's making them available to all devices at the same time and not releasing them in stages like other companies do. But when it does run into issues, rarely as that may be, said issues are big.

Case in point: MacRumors is reporting that the rollout of iPadOS 18 for the M4 iPad Pro, which started yesterday, has now been halted by Apple due to multiple reports of bricked iPads following the update.

Bricking means the device is no longer functional, so obviously this is as bad a situation as can be. Some...

Here's the first iPhone 16 Pro unboxing video

Apple unveiled the iPhone 16 family last week and they will all become available this Friday, on September 20. Be that as it may, someone has already gotten their hands on an iPhone 16 Pro - somehow. Naturally (and thankfully) they also decided to film their unboxing of the phone.

Not just that, but they have also provided us with a look at how the Camera Control behaves in real life. This new button is more than just a two-step camera shutter button (hi, Sony), featuring multiple sensors that make it incredibly versatile.
